Malachite is a copper carbonate hydroxide mineral, and is part of the carbonate mineral group. The copper impurities in the mineral give it a rich green color, which can range from light green to deep, dark green. Malachite often forms in distinctive banded or concentric ring patterns, creating a striking visual effect. It can also occur in rounded, lumpy shapes known as "botryoidal" formations. Malachite can sometimes occur in association with other minerals, such as Chrysocolla and Azurite, which are also copper carbonate minerals with a different number of copper atoms. Chrysocolla will have a lighter blue-green color and Azurite will have a dark blue color.
